Johnnie Walker Color Label Blind Test: Green Label Takes First Place
In a video released on September 26, 2026, through the YouTube channel 'Introduction to Alcoholic Beverages - Interesting Stories Behind Drinks', the results of a blind tasting conducted on Johnnie Walker Color Label products were covered in detail. To compensate for the first tasting held on June 3, where the aroma changes (aeration) could not be sufficiently observed because the products were tasted immediately upon opening, this test was re-conducted after several months, yielding unexpected results that differed from the products' price ranges or grades.
Re-tasting Process Considering Aeration Effects
The participants planned this test to compensate for the fact that during the first tasting in June, they experienced phenomena where the aroma continued to change because they tasted the products in a state where no aeration had occurred at all. Judging that there would not be significant changes after about a month, they chose a method of pouring and storing 300ml of each product separately to maximize the change in aroma. Additionally, to minimize changes in aroma during the evaluation process, they paid meticulous attention, such as keeping all lids closed when not tasting.
During the tasting process, differences in alcohol content between products were also identified. Green Label was 43%, while all other products were 40%. To prevent the phenomenon of nose numbness caused by drinking products with strong alcohol scents due to repeated tasting, the participants underwent a process of resetting their senses by taking a 20-minute break in the middle.
Blind Test Results: The Rise of Green Label and the Slump of Blue Label
As a result of the final blind test, the product that received the highest score was 'Green Label'. The participants chose Green Label as number one in two consecutive tests, confirming that the product captures both cost-effectiveness and taste. On the other hand, 'Blue Label', the iconic premium line of Johnnie Walker, failed to take first place in this test and remained in the lower ranks. In the video, an opinion was voiced that "no matter what you do, Blue doesn't come in first."
The rankings by product showed some differences from the grades. While Green Label took first place, the Double Black product also received positive evaluations. Conversely, Red Label, Blonde Label, and Transparent Label recorded relatively low rankings. The participants reported that while some parts of the results aligned with Johnnie Walker's intention (grade ranking), the slump of Blue Label was unexpected.
Product Characteristics and Differences in Taste
The characteristics of each product revealed during the tasting process are as follows. Green Label received high marks for its smoky flavor along with sweetness. The Benriach product was evaluated as having a rich taste, with a harmony of sweetness, caramel, and smokiness. Red Label was mentioned as being characterized by a sweet and bright taste. The 7 Years Old product recorded high scores for being tasty and smooth.
On the other hand, regarding Blue Label, there were opinions that the alcohol scent was felt strongly, or that the esophagus felt hot and a bitter taste remained after drinking. In the video, opinions were also presented that Blue Label smelled like chlorine-disinfected hay or plastic. Transparent Label and Black Label recorded medium ratings for both taste and aroma, receiving evaluations that they lacked distinct characteristics. Through this test, the participants confirmed that although there is a large price difference in the Johnnie Walker product lineup, Green Label or Double Black can be sufficiently attractive options depending on personal preference.
