Lieutenant Jang Seung-gu: The Story of Rescuing a Dating Violence Victim Following a Report to "Deliver Two Bowls of Jajangmyeon"

Lieutenant Jang Seung-gu, who is currently serving as a mobile unit team leader at the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency, shared a tense moment from his time working at the 112 emergency dispatch center, where he sensed a dating violence situation through only a short phone call and rescued the victim.

A motel report asking to "deliver two bowls of jajangmyeon": Recognizing dating violence through intuition

Lieutenant Jang Seung-gu revealed a case from his five years working at the 112 emergency dispatch center, where a woman requested the delivery of two bowls of jajangmyeon to a motel. According to the actual dispatch center recording released in the video, the caller specified a room number, saying, "It's a motel near the pedestrian overpass, and you can just say you are from the jajangmyeon restaurant." Lieutenant Jang noted that the caller's voice was unstable, the location was a motel, and she had requested food for two people.

"I was flustered because women rarely make such requests as prank calls, but I had to act quickly because I couldn't waste time," Lieutenant Jang explained, adding, "Hearing her voice trembling, I instinctively sensed it was a dating violence situation." To ensure the caller felt safe, he instructed the responding officers to enter the scene naturally, acting like a jajangmyeon delivery person. As a result, the responding police were able to rescue the injured woman and arrest the male perpetrator on charges of special robbery.

Leading rescues through response methods for reports in difficult-to-locate highways and mountainous areas

Lieutenant Jang also mentioned specific response methods he suggested to ensure the safety of callers in situations where their location was difficult to pinpoint. He shared cases where, during the early morning hours when it was difficult for a caller to speak, he guided them to tap the phone screen "tap, tap, tap" to make noise to signal their location, or to wave a towel or tissue through a bathroom window to alert responding officers.

Additionally, he introduced a case of domestic violence occurring inside a vehicle driving on a highway. In a situation where the caller's location was constantly moving, Lieutenant Jang guided the caller to "go into the women's restroom, which is the safest place." He then requested cooperation from the nearby highway patrol, and the police were able to arrive at the scene within about 4 to 5 minutes to rescue the victim.

Catching a sex offender during a suspected kidnapping report: The judgment of a veteran shines

A case where a suspected kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl was resolved by converting it into a sex crime investigation was also revealed. Although the report was initially received as a simple kidnapping, Lieutenant Jang, using his judgment as a veteran of the dispatch center, kept the possibility of a sexual violence case in mind and utilized the 'S.O (Sexual Offender) search' system. Through this, he identified a sex offender within a 500m radius of where the report occurred and was able to safely rescue the child by finding an individual who matched the description in the CCTV.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Jang also spoke of the sorrows experienced during his work, mentioning the death of a fellow police officer who was handling a roadkill carcass (water deer) by the roadside, expressing the sadness and guilt he felt at the time. He added, "It is because of the efforts of police officers that the daily lives of citizens can be safe," and "Nothing is taken for granted."
