Hallasan Mountain crows prefer ramen over meat

Unlike the typical habits of omnivorous birds, crows on Hallasan Mountain in Jeju are showing a unique behavior of being obsessed with the taste of ramen. According to a video from KBS Animal TV : Animal for You animal4u, when hikers on Hallasan Mountain begin eating ramen, large flocks of crows appear, enough to cover the sky, to target the ramen.

The single-minded love for ramen of crows that even reject meat

Crows are usually known to be omnivorous birds that prefer meat the most. However, the crows of Hallasan Mountain made a surprising choice during a test prepared by the production team. In the experiment shown in the video, the crows pushed away snacks and focused solely on the taste of ramen. Scenes were even captured where they rejected meat, which was expected to be their favorite, and insisted on ramen. This phenomenon only appeared regarding food contained in ramen containers sold at the shop, and they showed a peculiar reaction of not even touching food contained in other types of containers brought from outside.

This phenomenon is a peculiar case that is hard to find in crows from other regions. When tests were conducted on flocks of crows in nearby areas, they showed no interest in ramen at all and did not eat it even after two hours. Experts also mentioned that the fact that Hallasan Mountain crows react uniquely to ramen like this is a phenomenon rarely seen elsewhere.

A special connection with the shop owner who cared for an injured crow

Behind the reason why the Hallasan Mountain crows became so obsessed with ramen, there was a special connection with the owner who used to run the shop. According to the video, it began about five years ago when the shop owner protected an injured crow and fed it ramen. At that time, the crow, which did not eat ramen at first, began to eat it, and seeing this, other crows also learned by eating ramen. Until two years ago, before the owner stopped running the shop, she built a bond by giving ramen to the crows every day.

Thanks to this connection, the crows show a familiar side, running toward the shop owner at once when they see her. Because the crows eat the leftover ramen from hikers so cleanly that there is almost no food waste generated in the process, it is also achieving an unintended effect in terms of waste disposal.
