Mercedes-Benz electric MPV VLE features design maximizing space utilization with 8-seater seat rails
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the VLE, an electric MPV built on a dedicated EV platform…
The electric MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) VLE, presented by Mercedes-Benz, has been revealed at an exhibition. Expanding the character of the existing commercial vehicle lineup, the V-Class, into a passenger model, this vehicle is designed based on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, demonstrating space utilization that differs from existing internal combustion engine models. In the Kim Han-yong's MOCAR video, details ranging from the exterior design of the exhibited VLE to the interior seat configuration and specifications for future autonomous driving technology were covered in depth.
Long rail system allowing various seat configurations and a flat floor
According to the Kim Han-yong's MOCAR video, one of the biggest features of the VLE is the long seat rail system that traverses the entire interior floor. These rails are designed in a structure shared by the front and rear seats, allowing the seat positions to be adjusted freely back and forth. In the video, it can be confirmed that the front and rear seats share one long rail, through which the seats move across a very wide range.
In particular, by utilizing the electric vehicle platform to design the floor to be completely flat, it is characterized by the ability to secure a wide loading space when the seats are removed. However, it is not that the long seat rails and flat floor mentioned in the video are only possible in electric vehicles; seat rails are also applied to the internal combustion engine model, the V-Class. However, the VLE is unique in that it was designed by newly designing the entire floor so that a completely flat space is created when all seats are removed.
The diversity of seat configurations is also notable. The video shows the possibility of reconfiguring the space, such as installing seats facing backward or arranging independent seats depending on the user's purpose. Seats can be arranged to accommodate from 6 to a maximum of 8 passengers, and the structure allows for simultaneous promotion of cargo loading and passenger convenience by adjusting the direction or spacing of the seats. For example, a configuration of three rows with 3 people each using the middle seats is also possible. However, the scope of seat replacement or options applied during actual sales may vary depending on the manufacturer's approval and domestic certification conditions.
Luxurious interior and details considering user convenience
The interior design maintains the simple yet luxurious atmosphere characteristic of Mercedes-Benz. A typical Mercedes-Benz steering wheel is applied to the driver's seat, and an air vent design that gives a futuristic feel is included. Displays are placed on the dashboard, and a space where two wireless charging pads can be used simultaneously is also provided. The space next to the driver's seat is empty and can be used as storage space to place bags, etc.
Details of the storage space are also confirmed. Thin drawer-type storage spaces are placed throughout the interior to allow for the storage of small items. Additionally, the door handles operate in a pop-up manner, and the sliding doors feature electric opening and closing functions. On the exterior, cameras are mounted to respond to autonomous driving technology, which appears to be a configuration for driving assistance systems to be provided in the future. The MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO mentioned in the video is an SAE Level 2 driving assistance system that requires driver supervision.
Scalability based on electric vehicle platform and expectations for domestic introduction
The VLE is manufactured based on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, implementing a flat interior floor and a long rail system that is difficult to realize in internal combustion engine vehicles. From the manufacturer's perspective, it has an efficient structure that can respond to various customer needs by simply changing the seat configuration while maintaining the same platform. The fact that various options, such as changing the direction of the seats or using independent seats, can be addressed with a single platform is an advantageous point from the manufacturer's side.
The video predicted that if this vehicle is introduced to the country, it will become an option that can compete with the Carnival, Lexus LM, and Toyota Alphard, which are popular in the electric vehicle market. In particular, considering the preferences of domestic consumers, it is analyzed that there is a possibility of gaining considerable popularity if it is released with reinforced luxury options such as displays or electric seats. The specifications currently revealed are based on the European exhibition car, and the option configuration such as displays or electric functions may differ upon actual domestic launch.
