A small game started in the United States in 1965 to relieve children's boredom is establishing itself as a global sport. The protagonist is 'Pickleball', which evenly possesses the characteristics of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Recently, it has been gaining attention in South Korea as a new lifestyle sport, and it is trending to spread rapidly with the weapon of a low barrier to entry that anyone can easily access.

Plastic balls using air resistance and two unique rules

According to a Culture Portal video, Pickleball is differentiated from existing racket sports starting from its equipment. It uses lightweight paddles and a perforated plastic ball. This ball moves at a slow speed thanks to the air resistance generated through the holes, which is a factor that helps even beginners easily adapt to the game. The court dimensions are also similar to a badminton court, making it highly accessible.

The core of Pickleball lies in its unique game rules. The video cites two major rules unique to Pickleball: the 'Two-bounce rule' and the 'Non-volley zone'. The Two-bounce rule means the rule where the ball must bounce once on the floor before being hit, and the Non-volley zone is an area that designates a specific zone in the middle of the court to limit volleys (hitting the ball before it touches the floor). Thanks to these rules, it prevents the game from becoming excessively intense and possesses characteristics of being smoother and easier to learn compared to other sports.

Participating in games with 30 minutes of training, a doubles-centered sport that connects people

The biggest characteristic of Pickleball is its low barrier to entry. According to the explanation from a Pickleball official appearing in the video, it is easy enough to learn that one can participate in an actual game immediately after receiving about 30 minutes of basic training. This acts as a great advantage for people encountering exercise for the first time. Even beginners can sufficiently feel the fun of the game in an hour or two.

Furthermore, Pickleball is a sport with active social interaction. Since doubles matches, where four people form teams, are the main event, it has a structure where one can naturally mingle with others even if visiting alone. The participant in the video emphasized that through Pickleball, one can meet various people, and highlighted its role as a space where people gather to drink tea, talk, and become close. Beyond simple physical activity, it is playing the role of a medium that connects person to person.

Currently, Pickleball is gaining popularity in various countries around the world, including the United States, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Japan, and in South Korea, infrastructure is in the stage of being expanded, such as the Seoul Metropolitan Government creating dedicated courts. While anyone can easily start, it is evaluated as a sport with high potential for development, as it can be delved into deeply as an elite sport.
