3 ways to securely hang hanging plant pots from gypsum board ceilings

Many people want to install hanging plants on their apartment living room ceilings, but they worry that the pots might fall due to the gypsum board material of the ceiling. This is because if regular screws are driven directly into the gypsum board, the gypsum gets ground away, weakening the holding power and creating a high risk of the pot falling. The cheapest method: A combination of Toe Anchor and ceiling J-hooks

The most economical way to install is by combining a 'Toe Anchor' and a 'ceiling J-hook'. The ceiling hook costs about 2,200 won, and the Toe Anchor is around 400 to 600 won per unit, meaning installation is possible for less than approximately 3,000 won when combining the two components. Toe Anchors are divided into types such as TA-30, TA-50, and TA-70, and the appropriate size must be selected according to the thickness of the usable gypsum board.

A point to note here is that when deciding the anchor size, one must calculate the sum of not only the 'thickness of the gypsum board' but also the 'thickness of the component (bracket, etc.) to be installed'. For example, if the standard gypsum board thickness is 9.5mm, the total sum of this plus the thickness of the bracket to be installed must not exceed the allowable range of the anchor. The video shows the process of selecting an appropriate anchor when the total thickness, including the bracket, is about 15mm.

The installation order is as follows. First, mark the location to be installed, lightly press the Toe Anchor to fix it, and drill a hole with an electric drill. After that, while the anchor is inserted, slightly loosen the screw to make the internal plastic wings spread out, then insert the bracket and tighten the screw again to fix it. Finally, screw in the ceiling hook to complete the process. Depending on the size of the Toe Anchor used, it can support a weight of approximately 10kg to 20kg.

Mid-range product: How to use Versa Hook

The second method is using the 'Versa Hook'. This product has a screw attached to the hook itself and comes as a set with a dedicated anchor. For installation, first drill an 8mm hole, insert the blue anchor, and then push the hook in from the bottom to make the screw spread its wings inside the gypsum board. If there is wood (plywood) passing inside the ceiling, it can be installed by driving the screw directly without an anchor.

The weight capacity of the Versa Hook varies depending on the installation environment. When installed using an anchor in the gypsum board, it can support about 9kg, and when installed by driving the screw directly into wood, it can withstand up to about 20kg. The price for one pack (a set of 2) is approximately 13,300 won.

High-end product: Features of Ceiling Driller Hook

The last high-end product introduced is the 'Ceiling Driller Hook'. Although the price per unit is somewhat high at about 14,900 won, its operating method is unique and its ease of use is high. This product first undergoes a process of pressing the plate against the gypsum board to fix it. The anchor structure inside the plate moves mechanically to grip the gypsum board tightly, preventing the screw from coming out.

The biggest advantage of the Ceiling Driller Hook is that after installation is complete, the user can set the angle of the hook as desired. This allows for free adjustment of the direction or position of the pot. Regarding load capacity, it can withstand about 14kg when installed in gypsum board and about 20kg when driven directly into wood.
