A Chihuahua named Harlequin, who lives in Scotland, is vying for the title of the world's smallest dog. Harlequin stopped growing at five months old and measures just over 9 cm when fully grown. The dog is barely visible when standing behind a beverage can. Harlequin's owner, Ashley McCluskey, believes Harlequin could claim the title of the world's smallest dog because the Chihuahua is tiny enough to resemble a mouse. If Harlequin does not grow any more before turning one year old, the dog could earn a Guinness World Record. This is because a dog must be a fully grown adult to compete for the record.

Meanwhile, the shortest dog ever recorded is Milly, a Chihuahua living in Puerto Rico. Milly, who set the record for the smallest dog in 2013, stands 9.65 cm tall. The shortest dog by body length is Brandy, a Chihuahua living in the United States. Brandy's body measures just 15.2 cm long.

Chihuahuas may be the smallest dog breed, but their personalities are anything but small. They are bold and full of confidence, and are often described as having a temperament similar to that of terriers. Despite their small size, they are wary of strangers and bark frequently, making them suitable watchdogs. They tend to bond with only one person in the family, but with appropriate interaction, they can also become friendly with others. However, without proper socialization as puppies, Chihuahuas can easily grow into timid dogs.
