Hedgehogs can be sociable pets, but prospective owners should consider their solitary nature, sharp spines, nocturnal habits, and daily care needs.

In a PetMD article, Laurie Hess explained, "Hedgehogs are suitable pets and are adorable, small insect-eating mammals. Their average lifespan is about 4–7 years." Hedgehogs are also known to be shy animals. However, hedgehog owners say, "Hedgehogs respond well when their names are called, and once they develop a bond, they become sociable animals that mingle comfortably with family members."

If you are considering a hedgehog as a new pet, there are a few facts you should know.

Hess noted that hedgehogs live in Africa, Europe, Asia, and New Zealand. These spiny friends have recently become one of the most popular pets in the United States. Pet hedgehogs in North America today are believed to be African hedgehogs that were brought over and domesticated. They are known as "African pygmy hedgehogs." With the right living environment, hedgehogs can become more playful and sociable pets.

Adopting a hedgehog through the International Hedgehog Association or the Hedgehog Welfare Society is also a good option. Of course, you may also find one at a nearby animal shelter or pet store. Wherever you look, you can meet a hedgehog of your own.

Hess said, "Hedgehogs are well suited to people who spend a set amount of time with their pets every day." Hedgehogs generally do well alone and do not need another hedgehog for companionship. However, they should occasionally be taken out of their enclosure for exercise and social interaction.

Hedgehogs are shy animals and tend to hide their faces and limbs when they feel afraid or threatened. They sometimes curl into a ball to protect themselves, causing their sharp spines to point outward. This can pose a risk to households with young children or people with sensitive skin, so caution is necessary.

Because hedgehogs are nocturnal, they may run on their exercise wheels at night. They may therefore be unsuitable for light sleepers. Since they mostly sleep during the day, they are ideal for people who, like hedgehogs, prefer to be active at night.
