How to Find a Lost Cat More Easily
PetMD shares practical ways to find a lost cat, from calm approaches and scent cues to photos and microchipping.
How to Find a Lost Cat
According to PetMD, indoor cats may feel overwhelmed by unfamiliar smells and noises outdoors and may therefore choose to return home. However, owners should avoid loudly calling the cat’s name or clapping in their excitement at finding it, as this could make the cat even more frightened. If the cat stops walking and looks back, PetMD advises owners to “immediately kneel down and extend a hand without making eye contact.” They should then call the cat’s name in a quiet voice.
According to PetMD, if the cat does not approach, owners should bring out the litter tray it used and scatter some soiled litter around it. Food and water should also be placed near the tray. The ideal place to put it is near the front door. When the cat approaches the food, use the tray to guide it inside the house.
What should owners do when they discover that their cat is missing? First, they should search the house thoroughly, checking every corner and shelf the cat might use as a hiding place. If there is no sign that the cat is inside, owners can use an old shirt and a pair of unused sneakers. They should put on the shirt and sneakers and walk through the house looking for the cat. If this does not work, they can remove the shirt and hang it somewhere the wind can carry its scent, then place the shoes outside the front door.
One recommended safe method is to have a microchip implanted in the cat. Some animal shelters and veterinary clinics have portable devices that can scan microchips, making it easier to find the cat this way. Moreover, unlike an ID tag or collar, a microchip cannot be easily removed, making it a useful way to locate a cat.
PetMD also suggested a more traditional method: always carrying a photo of the cat. PetMD said the photo can help owners easily determine whether a cat roaming the streets is their own.
