The International Cat Association (TICA) has officially recognized a new breed known as the werewolf cat. Also called the Lykoi cat, it boasts a sleek physique and a coat blending black and silver. Its eyes are a mixture of black and gold. The name Lykoi comes from the Greek word “Lycos,” meaning wolf. Encountering one in the dark may be startling, but Lykoi cats are friendly and affectionate.

They are also highly intelligent and enjoy games that challenge their minds. Lykoi cats exhibit dog-like behaviors, such as retrieving thrown toys and tracking moving animals. They enjoy being with their owners but also play well with toys when alone. When meeting unfamiliar people or animals, they become wary because they feel the need to protect their family. They therefore observe newcomers until they are sure they pose no danger. They protect not only their family but also their toys. Lykoi cats are highly active and energetic, always chasing something or playing with toys.

The breed was discovered in 2011. Its discoverers, Johnny Gobble, Brittney Gobble, and Patti Thomas, found unusual-looking kittens and bred the cats to demonstrate to TICA that their distinctive appearance was genetic rather than caused by disease or another problem.
