Today, we introduce one of the toughest canine swimmers: the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, also known as the Chessie.

This medium-sized dog has a distinctive coat that does not easily become soaked. A Chessie's coat may be brown, sedge or dead-grass in color, with the shade varying according to the environment.

PetMD, a pet-focused publication, noted that the breed has webbed feet, strong legs and an oily coat, traits that allow the Chessie to swim easily in the water.

The breed's coat is also waterproof, consisting of a dense undercoat and a wind-resistant outer coat. Chessies have a lifespan of 10 to 13 years.

Although the breed was developed in the United States, it came from England.

"In 1807, the American ship Canton rescued the crew and cargo of an English vessel wrecked off the coast of Maryland," PetMD said.

Among the survivors, two Newfoundland dogs and a black female dog named Canton were rescued. All three dogs were excellent swimmers and were crossed with Irish Water Spaniels, Bloodhounds, Newfoundlands and local hounds.

The aim was to create a dog breed capable of swimming through the rough, cold waters of Chesapeake Bay, and the breed's name was derived from that region.

Local hunters used Chessies to hunt ducks. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1885, and it is considered one of the oldest breeds registered with the organization.

PetMD wrote, "The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is tough, strong-willed and always eager to learn new things." The breed also enjoys swimming, walking and other outdoor activities.

Despite being an active outdoor dog, the Chessie is gentle and quiet, making it a good companion dog as well. If you enjoy swimming, this dog will make an excellent swimming partner.
