The Flying Squirrel's Perfect Flight

A study of 10 flying squirrels reveals how their membranes, feet and tails control direction, distance and safe landings.

[Dog News = Reporter Ji Mi-ok] The flying squirrel's flight capabilities have been revealed.

Last year, the National Geographic Wild channel on the online video platform YouTube uploaded a research video by biology professor John Scheibe, who has devoted more than 20 years to studying flying squirrels. This challenge, initiated by Professor Scheibe, was designed to assess the flying squirrels' capabilities by measuring their sense of directional control and flight distance.

The experiment took place in an arena with conditions similar to the wild, providing a safe setting that would not strain the squirrels. The flying squirrel's wing-like membrane is used to adjust its flight angle, while its four feet help it steer for a smooth descent. Its fur-covered tail is used to change direction in midair. The section near its armpits is essential for controlling its descent speed, much like when an airplane lands.

The flying squirrel moved onto a tree branch suspended about 15 meters above the ground. After looking around, it thrust its hindquarters into the air and launched itself. The squirrel turned to the right and quickly slipped into a corner beneath the empty spectator stands.

Nine other squirrels also took part in the challenge, and the study showed that they could fly perfectly. They also amazed onlookers by safely demonstrating a descent in the opposite direction.
