A Starving Polar Bear Rummages Through a Garbage Truck: How Can We Help Save Polar Bears?

Habitat destruction caused by global warming is putting countless animals at risk of extinction.

According to research published by researchers in the United States and Canada in the international journal Nature Climate Change, global warming has caused much more Arctic ice to melt than in the past, and the study found that polar bears would become extinct 80 years from now.

Polar bears, which mainly hunt on sea ice, prey on seals, fur seals, and other animals that come up onto the ice. However, they are now unable to find prey because the ice has melted.

As this situation continues, they are traveling long distances in search of prey or venturing as far as the coast.

Recently, a video of a polar bear climbing onto a garbage truck as if begging for food went viral, prompting sympathy from internet users.

In the video, believed to have been filmed somewhere in Russia, several polar bears were clinging to a garbage truck that had broken down and stopped on the road, with some even crawling inside.

The man filming the video appeared fascinated but also saddened, remarking that the polar bears must have been extremely hungry to behave that way.

The viral video raised awareness among many internet users. One thing we can do in our daily lives to protect polar bears' habitat is reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Limiting the use of disposable products and taking public transportation or riding a bicycle instead of driving can also help save polar bears.

Meanwhile, Polar Bears International designated February 27 as “International Polar Bear Day” to raise global awareness of the crisis facing polar bears.
