Kimbap typically contains pickled radish, fish cake, egg, beef, spinach and carrots. The ingredients commonly used in kimbap are generally easy to find. Kimbap is often packed in lunchboxes for picnics or outings, or eaten as a snack.

Recently, many varieties of kimbap have been made with ingredients such as cheese, tuna and kimchi. Different types are also distinguished by their shape, including triangular kimbap, Kkomi kimbap made small enough for a young child to eat in one bite, and nude kimbap with the rice on the outside. Chungmu kimbap, which contains no other fillings and is eaten with radish kimchi and seasoned squid, is so famous that it has become a regional symbol.
