Popular around the world for its luxuriant coat and prim-looking mouth, the Persian cat was discovered in the Middle East in the 1600s and later introduced to Europe, where it became widely loved. Its coat and eyes come in various colors, and Persian cats are sometimes further classified according to the shape of their nose.

Persians without flat noses are called Doll-faced, while those with flat noses are called Peke-faced. Doll-faced Persians have round, well-defined faces and are said to resemble the original form of the Persian. Peke-faced Persians, by contrast, are known for their cute appearance created by their flat noses and resemble the Pekingese dog breed. Their defining feature is a short, flattened nose that appears nestled between the eyes. The type was born by chance in 1930 as an ordinary red Persian kitten.

While Doll-faced Persians gained popularity in Europe, Peke-faced Persians became popular in the United States and Canada and even won awards at several cat shows.

Peke-faced Persians prefer quiet surroundings and spend most of their time on the sofa or sleeping. Pet publication PetMD said, “Peke-faced Persians have a calm temperament but also know how to show affection to their owners.” As a result, they adapt well to new homes and approach visitors in a friendly manner. However, they are also peace-loving cats that prefer being alone to living with other cats.
