Affogato: Where Espresso Meets Ice Cream—How Do You Make and Eat It?

Learn how to make and eat affogato by pouring 60 ml of espresso over ice cream, plus a black tea variation for those who dislike espresso.

Affogato is a coffee whose Italian name means “to pour over” or “to drown.” It is served by pouring hot espresso over vanilla ice cream. When hot espresso is poured over cold ice cream, its sweetness blends with the rich aroma of coffee to create a distinctive flavor. The ice cream quickly melts away in the mouth, while the coffee’s intense finish lingers, leaving an excellent aftertaste.

Making affogato is very easy. Affogato was once an unfamiliar menu item, but it has recently become common in cafés, and more people are making it at home. Scoop ice cream into a glass, then add chopped cookies or top it with nuts to taste. Extract 60 ml of espresso. Pour the espresso over the ice cream in the glass. Carefully pour it so that it runs down the inside of the glass, while pouring about one-third directly over the ice cream. Adjust the amount of espresso that settles at the bottom of the glass and the amount poured over the ice cream according to your preference. With these simple steps, the affogato is ready. To eat it, use a spoon to scoop from the surface first, as though eating foam or cream. Scoop up the ice cream and espresso together to experience its distinctive flavor.

Espresso Over Starbucks Ice Cream?

Affogato is also available at Starbucks. Starbucks offers affogatos with a variety of nut toppings and different types of ice cream. Its affogato menu includes Nuts Vanilla Affogato, Nuts Chocolate Affogato, Vanilla Affogato, Java Chip Anilla Affogato, Java Chip Chocolate Affogato, and Chocolate Affogato.

Dislike espresso’s characteristically bitter taste? You can enjoy affogato with black tea instead. Brew your preferred black tea slightly stronger than usual. As with a regular affogato, simply pour it over the ice cream. Your black tea affogato is ready to enjoy.
