A Former Hotel Chef's Special Parrot Meal: Fruit Salad with Egg Yolk and Perilla Oil
A former hotel chef prepares specialized nutritious meals for parrots, including a special fruit salad and porridge for young birds.
The sight of Siwori, a Blue-and-yellow Macaw boasting brilliant colors as it flies through the sky in a park in Busan, has been captured. Siwori has completed more than three months of training through a sufficient instructor course with its owner, demonstrating the ability to return immediately upon the owner's call. In the KBS 'Live Info' video broadcast on November 19, 2019, the special daily life of a man who lives with parrots and prepares sincere meals for them was captured.
Special 'Fruit Salad' for Parrots Made by a Former Hotel Chef
The protagonist in the video, Gi-ho, utilized his 20-year career as a hotel chef to present a special menu for the parrots. He uses fruit, one of the parrots' favorite foods, as the main ingredient. Rather than simply cutting up fruit, he prepares a 'special fruit salad' that considers both nutrition and taste.
The cooking process is as follows. First, fresh fruit is prepared into sizes easy for the parrots to eat. To supplement protein and nutrition, a special salad sauce is made using egg yolk. The video shows him gently stirring the sauce so that the young birds can eat it, and finally, perilla oil is added to enhance the flavor. Thanks to this sincerity, the parrots enjoy the completed special meal.
Recipe for 'Porridge-style Weaning Food' for 2-Month-Old Young Birds
Gi-ho does not forget to provide meticulous care not only for adult parrots but also for Blue, a 2-month-old young bird. In the wild, parent birds deliver digested food through their mouths, but currently, Gi-ho directly makes and feeds weaning food. The most important thing to be careful of in this process is the 'texture' of the food.
This is because young birds' digestive organs are not yet fully developed, and the food must go down smoothly into their mouths. The video explains that they feed porridge-style weaning food because if the food is too oily, the birds, who cannot chew well yet, might have the food block their windpipes.
A Space Where About 60 Parrots and Injured Birds Live Together
To live healthily and for a long time with parrots, Gi-ho studies avian medical books himself and recently even obtained the 'Level 1 Companion Bird Caretaker' certification. He currently lives with four parrots in an apartment and operates a space in Jeonju, Jeonbuk, where about 60 parrots live together.
This place is where injured birds that have no ankles or were neglected gather. In the video, Gi-ho appears, saying he brought in a budgie with no ankles because he felt sorry for it. Gi-ho shared that he feels rewarded in the process of abandoned children finding new lives in his hands. He continues his activities with the hope of helping more people raise companion birds correctly and wishing for many parrots to fly healthily and happily.
