Please do not touch a stranger's dog!
Guidelines for respecting pet owners and dogs, explaining why sudden contact can cause fear, distraction, or aggression in various types of dogs.
The same applies even if the dog is not a guide dog. Not all dogs like strangers, and even those that like people may not enjoy being touched. Additionally, dogs that are blind or deaf may feel fear from sudden contact. If startled, dogs may bare their teeth, growl, or bite to protect themselves. In times like today, when dog bite accidents are frequent, extra caution is required.
Furthermore, the dog might still be undergoing training. Not only puppies but even adult dogs require socialization training. If a stranger approaches a dog that is just beginning to learn these social interactions, the dog may feel fear. Therefore, if you want to prevent strangers from approaching your dog, you should walk in less crowded areas. If a pet dog shows serious aggression, muzzle training is necessary. It is important to make the dog feel comfortable wearing a muzzle.
Even those who do not own dogs should respect others' pets. In other words, if you become interested in a passing dog, you should first ask the owner if it is okay to approach or pet them, and you should not take it personally if the owner refuses. Likewise, pet owners should decline contact from strangers if they believe their dog is not ready to accept them, in order to prevent any potential accidents.
