Precautions when adopting a coconut crab: Prepare for strong claw strength and escape instincts

According to a video from the YouTube channel 'TV Saengmul Dogam' (released on September 12, 2026), the process of creating a breeding environment for a recently adopted coconut crab was introduced along with the unique habits of this creature.

Strong grip and escape instinct: A sturdy enclosure is essential

The presenter in the video warned about the powerful strength of the adopted coconut crab. They emphasized that even if the individual is small in size, the pressure of the claws is significant, and one could be seriously injured if bitten. In particular, to safely hold a coconut crab, it was recommended to press down on the long leg portions to control its movement. However, they added that this method is only possible when the individual is calm, and for fierce wild individuals or large individuals, even this method may not be easy.

Furthermore, coconut crabs are creatures with excellent escape abilities. The presenter mentioned that there is a risk of escape if the height of the enclosure is low and explained that installing a lid is essential. Specifically, because coconut crabs are strong and can break through ordinary lids, it was advised to use a very sturdy enclosure or choose a type with high glass walls.

Setting up the breeding environment using coco chips and water bowls

For the interior setting of the enclosure, 'coco chips' made from coconut shells were used as substrate. While it is good to spread plenty of coco chips, the video shows the height being adjusted to allow for easy observation when the purpose is display or observation. After spreading the substrate, water must be sprayed sufficiently to maintain humidity.

There are precautions to take when setting up the water bowl. Since coconut crabs are strong and can easily flip water bowls, it is recommended to use a heavy water bowl if possible or fix it in place by placing stones around it. Also, despite being a type of crab, there is a risk of drowning if they fall completely into the water bowl, so it is important to fill the water to a depth from which they can climb out themselves. The water should be freshwater by default, but an environment can be created by adding a small amount of salt.

Omnivorous diet and natural breeding

Coconut crabs are omnivorous creatures, and in addition to dedicated feed, they can consume a balanced nutrition by being fed small amounts of insects (such as mealworms), pork, or beef. The video shows the process of feeding the dedicated feed and monitoring the condition for early adaptation after adoption. The coconut crab in the video was seen moving its antennae and exploring its surroundings.
