Students often tend to engage in so-called “cramming” when an exam is just around the corner. They struggle to pack as much knowledge as possible into their heads in a short period of time. Unfortunately, however, this approach does not guarantee good exam results. If you plan to study for more than 12 hours a day, you may want to reconsider. Doing well on an exam depends less on how long you study than on how much you actually understand and remember.

Here are several study tips you can use when preparing for an exam.

Start studying early. India Today noted in an article, “You should start studying for an exam as early as possible so that you have a chance to correct mistakes.” Starting early allows you to cover every topic on the exam syllabus. It also gives you time to take occasional breaks, helping your brain absorb more information.

Maintain a regular routine. Plan and prepare in advance what you will study each day. Setting a detailed study schedule lets you focus on studying right away without wasting time. However, do not try to study too much at once.

Make active use of “flash cards” when memorizing material. India Today noted, “Sometimes pictures are easier to understand and remember than words.” It is helpful to write descriptions or phrases on flash cards that are easy to associate with the material.

Get enough sleep the night before an exam. This will help relax your mind and body. India Today reported, “You need at least seven hours of sound sleep to properly store what you studied that day in your mind.” A lack of sleep can make you drowsy or distracted during the exam.
