Taking a Night Train in Vietnam
Practical tips for taking night trains in Vietnam cover advance booking, luggage size, upper-berth access, supplies, scams and theft.
In Vietnam, travelers can experience both Southeast Asian travel and an overnight train journey.
However, there are a few things to know before traveling by night train in Vietnam.
First, night trains should be booked in advance. It is best to purchase tickets ahead of time through a travel agency. Tickets should be secured early, especially when traveling during peak season or on a weekend. Contact a reputable travel agency to obtain tickets safely. When purchasing a ticket from a travel agency, you will receive a voucher that must be exchanged for the actual ticket at a ticket counter in a local Vietnamese train station.
Be mindful of the size of your luggage. Train corridors tend to be narrow, so an oversized backpack or bag could make it difficult to reach your seat or berth. Pack moderately sized luggage so that it can be stored under the bed.
Each compartment on the train has bunk beds, but there is no ladder for passengers using the upper berth. The bed frames are made of stainless steel, and anyone sleeping on an upper berth must climb up by holding onto the frame or other supports. People with problems affecting their arms, legs, or knees may find it difficult to climb into an upper berth and should use a lower one.
The bedding is clean, and every bed has a reading light and an electrical outlet. The toilets are also fairly clean, but passengers need to bring their own toilet paper.
Although food and drinks are sold on the train, it is best to bring your own meals or snacks. This will help you save money for the rest of your trip.
Also, beware of scams. A voucher issued by a travel agency must be shown only at the train station ticket counter. Do not show or hand it to a stranger, even if they offer to help. Remain alert to the theft of personal belongings on the train as well.
