Airplane Etiquette Rules
Respect fellow air travelers by managing luggage thoughtfully, limiting noise, reclining with permission, and allowing an orderly exit.
Some people, for example, use both armrests, talk on the phone, or constantly make bodily noises such as snorting and clearing their throats. Others undress or change clothes to make themselves comfortable during a long flight. Such behavior causes unnecessary stress for passengers seated nearby.
The following rules should be observed when flying.
Large bags should be checked with the airline at check-in. If a bag contains important belongings and must be taken on board, however, use a carry-on bag. If your luggage is heavy or somewhat large, ask those around you for understanding when moving it or placing it in the overhead bin. If you see someone struggling with their luggage, step in and offer to help.
Avoid making excessive noise during the flight. If someone nearby is being noisy, politely ask them to keep it down. The person beside you may take offense, but simply make the request kindly and with a smile.
If you want to recline your seat, check whether the passenger behind you is eating or using the tray table. Then ask whether it is all right to recline. If the passenger behind you says no, it is best to leave the seat upright.
After landing, be considerate and allow passengers ahead of you to retrieve their luggage and disembark first. If you are seated on the aisle, you can also help retrieve other passengers’ luggage. It is easier for the person in the aisle seat to take down a bag and hand it to its owner than for others to step into the aisle to retrieve it themselves. When leaving the aircraft, remember to thank the flight attendants.
