How to Prevent Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs from Invading Your Home in Winter

The brown marmorated stink bug, commonly called a “fart bug,” is an insect that releases a strong odor when threatened. Because it enters homes to escape the cold, it is commonly found indoors during winter.

Brown marmorated stink bugs are mainly found in China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, but they were also discovered across the United States in 1990. According to Wikipedia, they are generally classified as agricultural pests.

Below are several ways to get rid of brown marmorated stink bugs, as described by Erin Huffstetler in The Balance.

Backyards and gardens provide perfect winter shelters for bugs. Therefore, any piles of wood or leaves should be removed. It is also advisable to clean nearby ditches, fences, and compost piles.

Weeds growing in the garden should be pulled regularly. Brown marmorated stink bugs feed on weeds, leaves, and grass, so when these food sources disappear, they begin seeking fruit trees, vegetables, and ornamental plants.

To prevent bugs from gathering near the home, prune every fall and remove any piles of leaves near the house or yard.

Seal cracks around windows and doors to prevent bugs from entering the house. Damaged windows should also be repaired or replaced. Take similar action if weatherstripping is worn or boards are rotten. Cover all vents and drains with mesh screens.

When you find a bug, kill it by placing it in the toilet and flushing or by washing it away with soapy water. If there are many bugs in the house, you can also use a vacuum cleaner. However, be sure to use a model with a disposable bag. Otherwise, the bugs’ terrible odor will permeate the vacuum and linger for some time.
