[FamTimes reporter Lee Kyung-han] A cat's purr sounds gentle, calm and endearing. But when a cat purrs, it means more than simply that something is good.

A cat's purr can have both positive and negative meanings.

Purring when a cat is comfortable and happy is a good sign. Cats make this sound around their mothers or owners. Adult cats purr less often than kittens.

If your cat purrs when you approach, it means the cat is happy to see you.

At such times, the cat makes a very quiet sound, so you need to get close to hear it clearly. This behavior shows that the cat is attached to and trusts people.

Cats sometimes purr to calm themselves. It is their way of reassuring themselves that everything will be all right in a stressful situation.

Depending on the circumstances, purring may also mean that a cat is ill. Most cats become very stressed when they visit an animal hospital. As a result, they tend to purr more than usual.

The sound can sometimes be deceptive. Hearing a cat purr may make you think it is relaxed, but cats sometimes purr to reassure their owners.

When cats feel pain or sadness, they purr as if to say that they are all right. Regardless of breed or size, all cats make purring sounds.

The so-called “purring song” is part of a cat's identity. As with any expression of identity, this behavior also reveals what is going on inside a cat.
