Scott Sillinger, who lives in the United States, was startled after storing birdseed in his garage.

His garage had become completely overrun with moths.

Sillinger said he believed the moth larvae had grown by feeding on the birdseed.

To eliminate the moths that had invaded his garage, he made a pheromone trap. Pheromone traps are the most effective way to catch moths, and because they do not require insecticides, they produce no unpleasant odor and are safe for people and pets. They can also be used against all types of moths.

Pheromone traps use chemical pheromones. Female moths use these chemicals to attract males.

Eliminating all the male moths prevents them from reproducing, so no eggs or larvae are produced.

Several precautions can help prevent moths from invading closets and other areas of the home.

Moths prefer dark, warm places, so they often lay eggs inside closets. Closets should therefore be thoroughly cleaned, including every corner. Remove all clothing, then vacuum dust from every corner and drawer. Afterward, wipe down the closet with a cloth and detergent.

Have clothing, curtains, and similar items dry-cleaned, as perspiration and food residue left on fabrics can provide food for moths. Used clothing purchased from a vintage store should be washed especially thoroughly.

Place small items in plastic bags, seal them, and leave them in the freezer. This can kill moth larvae.

Knitwear should be stored in sealable zippered bags to keep it from becoming a target for moths. Cedar pieces that repel moths can also be placed inside drawers.

Because cedar repels moths, purchasing cedar hangers can also help.

When the weather becomes warm, ventilate rooms thoroughly and place natural oil diffusers inside closets. Check clothing frequently for holes made by moths or larvae.

If the moths persist after all these steps, use fumigation or pest control methods as a last resort.
