Life Lessons We Can Learn from Dogs
Dogs teach us to live in the present, avoid procrastination, find nearby joy, gather facts before judging, and embrace new experiences.
Dogs live in the present.
For dogs, what is happening today matters most, so they have no concern for what may happen tomorrow. We humans, however, are so preoccupied with the past and the future that we fail to focus on today. Let’s leave yesterday and tomorrow behind and enjoy the present.
Dogs do not procrastinate.
Dogs do what they want as soon as they want to do it. If they want to play, they play; if they want to take a nap, they sleep. When dogs want to do something, they do not wait until every condition is perfect. People, however, sometimes become so caught up in weighing every condition that they miss what truly matters.
Dogs find joy in what is right in front of them.
Dogs savor the moment and find joy in the people and things around them. They immediately recognize the good things nearby. But when people experience something depressing or face a desperate situation, they may fail to notice joy elsewhere. Even when something delightful happens right beside them, their low mood can prevent them from seeing it. Rather than dwelling on negative problems, we should look around and find joy.
Dogs gather objective information before making judgments.
Dogs take time to gather information about another being or an object in front of them. For example, a dog learns about a dog it has just met by sniffing its rear. When meeting a stranger, it circles the person and sniffs five or six times before deciding whether to trust them. People, however, often act in hopes of gaining something when they meet someone. Even when building trust with others, they may emphasize, “There are benefits to being friends with me.” Dogs, by contrast, seek nothing from others except affection.
Dogs are always ready to move on to something else.
As if they know they do not have much time, dogs immediately try everything they can and enjoy the moment. Rather than worrying and agonizing, they think about joy. People should do the same.
