Job hunting requires patience. You may have experienced submitting a résumé and waiting several weeks, only to be told that you did not meet the qualifications or that someone else had already been hired.

Before submitting your résumé to a prospective employer, ask yourself the following questions to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Does the job align with my long-term career plans? Whether it is a regular or non-regular position, consider whether it will help you develop the right skills to pursue your future aspirations.

You should also determine whether you are a good fit for the role. Read the job description carefully before submitting your résumé. Some companies may provide detailed explanations of the type of candidate they are seeking alongside the job description.

Job seekers should also assess whether they meet the nonnegotiable essential requirements, such as education or work experience.

What do you know about the organization's culture? By considering the work environment at your previous company, you can identify which companies to target in your job search.

Will the commute be difficult? When looking for a job, consider the commuting time and whether you can drive your own car to work. Calculate how much public transportation would cost annually or, if you drive, how much you would spend on fuel.

Do you know anyone who works at the company? If so, your chances of getting hired are higher. That is why it is important to check your network for anyone who currently works or has previously worked there. Meeting with that person can give you insight into what it is like to work at the organization.

Have you edited your résumé and cover letter? Whenever changes are needed, you should update your résumé.

Your reputation in the online job market also matters. Make sure your online presence is consistent with your résumé. Recruiters are watching job seekers anytime, anywhere.
