Minimalism Is a Global Trend
Practical decluttering tips use the 90-day rule and a 30-day Minimalist Game to create more space by discarding, selling, or donating items.
[FamTimes reporter Jennylyn Gianan] Minimalism is all the rage these days. Many people prefer small electronic devices, owning fewer possessions, ripped jeans and T-shirts, and even tiny homes.
However, not everyone pursues a minimalist lifestyle. Minimalism can be difficult if you enjoy collecting things or have children, as you need a variety of items.
Still, gradually decluttering and organizing with a strategy can help.
Having many possessions leaves less room. It makes a small home look even smaller and can sometimes feel suffocating. Old supermarket flyers, unwanted newspapers, and similar items should be recycled or thrown away.
Rather than carelessly leaving things you bought during the day and brought home on your desk, it is better to put them away somewhere.
Putting away or discarding stretched-out clothes, pens or pencils, expired coupons, and other such items gives your home a little breathing room.
One thing to remember is the 90-day rule. Carefully consider whether you will use a particular item within the next 90 days or whether you have used it during the past 90 days.
Consider four pairs of sweatpants saved for dusty tasks such as a major housecleaning but not worn once in the past two years. If you are not going to wear them, it is best to donate them to someone who needs clothes.
How many pens do you no longer use? Clear them out as soon as possible.
Also, when deciding what to do with a particular item, think objectively. If your answer is “no,” it is best to discard the item or sell it to someone who needs it. These days, specialized websites make it possible to trade secondhand goods online.
If you own several of the same item, there are plenty of opportunities to sell them. If they cannot be sold, giving them to a neighbor or donating them is also a good option.
If you find it difficult to throw things away, you can play the “Minimalist Game.”
The first rule of the game is to discard one item every day for 30 days. There is also an advanced version for those who want to become more committed minimalists.
Discard one item on the first day, two on the second, and three on the third. Whether you find it fun or think it is crazy, there is no harm in trying.
