Tips to Make an Apartment Look More Spacious
Nine tips cover color, flooring, windows, storage, mirrors, walls and doors, skylights, furniture, and lighting to make apartments look larger.
[FamTimes reporter Jennylyn Gianan] Due to high housing costs, many people live in small homes such as apartments, studios, or prefabricated houses.
When living in a small home, you need to use every space wisely and keep it organized. Here are nine tips for making an apartment look more spacious.
1. Color
Color choices are important. Always choose light colors. The lighter the colors, the larger the home will appear. Painting the ceiling white makes it look higher, while different colors should be used to distinguish separate areas.
2. Flooring
Large tiles or wide floorboards make a space look more spacious, and laying floorboards diagonally makes it appear even larger.
3. Windows
Install curtains close to the ceiling. Use lightweight or sheer curtains so that light can pass through the windows. Remember: the brighter the space, the larger it looks.
4. Storage
Shelves mounted high make a room appear taller. Choose light-colored storage cabinets and avoid colors that contrast too sharply with the walls.
5. Mirrors
Mirrors reflect both natural and artificial light, making a space feel larger.
6. Walls and Doors
For separate rooms, use glass doors or sliding walls.
7. Skylights
Installing a skylight in a confined space makes the apartment interior look larger.
8. Furniture
Use dual-purpose furniture such as sofa beds, and consider choosing space-saving furniture as well.
9. Lighting
Combining ambient, task, and general lighting makes a space look larger.
