How Can After-School Activities Boost Learning Without Causing Stress?

After-school activities can build skills, confidence, and independence, but balanced schedules and regular rest help prevent stress and burnout.

Typical after-school activities help children develop their skills and passions while fostering their ability to learn independently. However, many children also experience stress from these activities. Experts note that participating in too many activities can actually hinder their ability to learn.

Rachel Curtis, a speech-language pathologist and former teacher, said, “Children do well when they begin to have structure. After-school activities become part of that structure.” For example, after-school sports allow children to socialize with their peers and release their energy.

Through after-school activities, children can develop skills, discover their areas of interest, and connect with peers who share those interests.

After-school activities such as theater, sports, and science can help children build self-esteem and develop their identities. They can also benefit children who struggle at school.

Social psychologist Dr. Susan Newman said, “Loading young children with too many activities can undermine their concentration, making it difficult for them to reap the benefits of after-school activities.” She also pointed out, “Many parents do not realize that their children’s schedules are unrealistic and may actually have a negative effect.”

Clinical psychologist Dr. Harpreet Kaur suggested creating an easy-to-read timetable—whether in the form of a calendar or schedule—and posting it somewhere visible.

If your child has overly busy days, set aside at least one hour each week for adequate rest. During this time, the whole family should relax together and do something that helps them bond. Families can choose from many activities, ranging from cooking to playing games or watching movies.

Young children can participate in a variety of after-school activities, but whenever possible, it is best to choose areas that interest them.

After-school activities should be fun as well as provide opportunities to gain new knowledge and develop new skills. However, schedules should be planned in moderation to prevent children from becoming stressed or burned out.
