Air Purifier Rankings? Choose the Best Fit, Not Simply the Best
Choose an air purifier by matching HEPA and activated carbon filters to pollutants, smoke and odors, while considering room size and ease of use.
1. What Needs to Be Removed
When ranking air purifiers for purchase, the first consideration should be identifying what needs to be removed. Different air purifiers are used for different targets, including common airborne particles, odors, gases and specific airborne pollutants.
For common targets such as pollen, mold spores and dander, an air purifier with a HEPA filter is the best choice. This is because HEPA filters can capture finer particles than other air-purifier filters. If you need to remove odors and gases, however, an air purifier with an activated carbon filter should be on your shopping list. Although air purifiers cannot remove every odor and gas, activated carbon filters are specifically designed to filter them out.
If you need to remove smoke, a product equipped with both activated carbon and HEPA filters is recommended. Because smoke consists of airborne particles and gases, an air purifier with both types of filter is needed to remove it effectively.
2. Air Purifier Effectiveness
An air purifier's effectiveness depends not only on the type of filter but also on the unit's size. If you need to purify the air in a larger room but have a mini air purifier, its effect may be minimal. You should therefore choose an air purifier suited to the size of the space you want to purify.
3. Ease of Use
A good air purifier should not only purify the air efficiently but also be convenient to use. Options have recently expanded to include products with diverse features, such as in-car air purifiers that clean the air inside enclosed vehicles, as well as air purifiers across a wide range of prices.
