How to Help Your Child Navigate Their First Day of School
Positive preparation, early routines and active school involvement can help children and parents navigate the first day of elementary school.
[FamTimes reporter Lee Kyung-han] Starting elementary school can be daunting for both parents and children. But if parents are physically and mentally prepared, they do not need to feel overly anxious about their child starting school for the first time.
When a child steps through the classroom door for the first time, both the child and the parents may experience a mixture of emotions, ranging from excitement and nervousness to uncertain joy and everything in between.
However, Michelle Doyle Wildman, head of the UK's parent-teacher association, says there are simple ways to avoid being overwhelmed by these emotions and make a great start to school life.
Here are some tips for preparing for your child's first day of school.
First, help your child feel excited about starting school. Read them books or stories about how much fun school can be. You should also talk with friends whose children are already attending school.
It is also a good idea to let your child try on their new school uniform in advance. Maintain a positive and relaxed outlook as well. If parents are anxious, their child will be anxious too.
It can also help to give your child homework in advance. Giving your child a sense of what it is like to complete homework assigned at school will help establish a daily routine and positively affect their learning.
It is also beneficial to take an active role in school-related activities. Find out whether there are any school events or evening gatherings for parents before the first day. Attending parent-teacher meetings or volunteering for school-related activities can also provide opportunities to get to know other parents and teachers.
Being positive, enthusiastic and calm about your child starting school for the first time will greatly influence how well they embrace the beginning of the important academic journey ahead.
