How to Help Your First Child Bond With a New Sibling
Help a firstborn adjust to a new baby by reassuring them that love is not divided, modeling affection, and encouraging shared play and bonding.
[FamTimes reporter Park Joo-hye] The arrival of a new baby can be both exciting and frightening for your first child.
You can explain that they are becoming an older sibling, but this can be difficult for children to process.
Assuming the children are a few years apart, your first child may worry that the new baby will come home and receive all the attention.
Firstborn children may think, “I’ll get this much love, and the rest will go to the baby.” This can become a problem, and as a parent, you need to teach your first child that this is not true.
Because your child is too young to have an in-depth conversation about love and family, you need to speak at a level they can understand.
Use as many examples as you can think of to help your child understand. You can use things they like, such as food, toys, games, and pictures.
Help your first child understand that your love for them has not changed and will not change when the new baby arrives.
Explain that the same kind of affection you show your first child will also be given to their new sibling. Do not merely tell them about the love you have for both children; demonstrate it through your actions as well.
Once children learn that love within a family is not something that gets divided, they follow their parents’ example.
Of course, some jealousy is unavoidable, but once firstborn children see how love circulates within the family, they will begin to behave differently.
They will start expressing affection more actively.
Encouraging the children to play together is a good way to help them feel affection for one another. Do activities together, play with the baby, and let the older child spend time with their younger sibling. It is a valuable opportunity to foster a bond that will continue as they grow.
There may be problems at first. But a home that is always filled with more affection will feel uplifting.
What matters is sound guidance and a positive approach to teaching.
