How Should Parents Handle a Teenager’s Independence and Rebellion?
Parents can navigate teenage independence and rebellion through clear rules, constructive dialogue, rewards, compromise and loving support.
[FamTimes reporter Park Joo-hye] The teenage years, when adolescents go through puberty, can also be one of the most difficult periods for parents.
Adolescents develop a stronger sense of independence and may engage in “rebellious” behavior. They greatly enjoy cultivating their independence, but they can sometimes take it too far.
As their independence grows, teenagers become more aggressive and often more defiant. Telling them not to behave that way only irritates them, and parents may face an even more difficult period.
So how should parents handle such situations?
One long-standing approach is to use a reward system to manage an adolescent’s behavior. If parents increase their allowance or give them an opportunity to go out with friends, adolescents will willingly listen to their parents.
Rules can be frustrating, but they can also be beneficial. Adolescents are smarter than adults may think and will look for loopholes in the rules.
Parents can turn this shrewdness to their advantage by setting aside time to discuss basic rules. This helps adolescents understand what they may and may not do while also making them feel trusted.
Instead of simply pushing adolescents away whenever they rebel, parents can try talking with them. Parents tend to respond negatively in these situations. In the remaining 10% of cases, they often ask whether the teenager is being too serious or overly emotional.
Experts advise parents to compromise and cooperate with their children in such situations.
Adolescents need to learn to distinguish between right and wrong in their actions. At the same time, parents need to manage their own emotions so their children do not come to dislike or avoid them during the process.
Rebellion is inevitable among teenagers going through puberty. A parent’s role is to give adolescents opportunities to explore their individuality while offering gentle guidance and loving support.
