How to Rescue an Abused Dog
Learn how to help a chained or abused dog by documenting its condition, respecting property laws, speaking with the owner, and contacting authorities.
Animal welfare advocate Michelle Neff noted in an article for One Green Planet that chained dogs may have repeatedly tried to escape, been involved in accidents, or have owners who no longer want to keep them inside the home. Dogs often experience intense isolation and loneliness and become more aggressive.
To help a dog in distress, the first step is to learn about the relevant laws. Thorough preparation before taking action can help you avoid difficult situations. Below are specific ways to help a chained dog.
Document the dog's situation in detail. Do not enter the dog's owner's private property without permission. You may do so, however, if the owner permits it. Check the dog's health, age, size, breed, and where it is being kept. You can also gather other details by taking photos and videos.
When speaking with the owner, you can politely express your concerns about the dog's situation. If the owner is concerned about a particular problem, such as excessive barking, you can share information on how to prevent it. Offering the dog food or water or taking it for a walk can also help.
If these approaches do not work, you can seek help from a public agency such as an animal shelter. Presenting the documentation you have kept will greatly assist efforts to rescue the dog. Neff advised, “If you believe the dog's situation is urgent, you should report it as soon as possible.”
