Cats Help Revitalize Local Businesses Simply by Being There
Office and shop cats lift spirits, ease workplace stress, welcome customers, boost sales and support animal welfare.
The cats, named Wendy, Hilde and Gracie, have lived at the law firm for several years. Two came from a Norfolk animal shelter, while one was rescued from a street near the office.
Office manager Donna Elliott explained, “The cats bring joy and brighten the atmosphere in the office. Each of the three has a distinct personality, and they all like people.”
Meanwhile, in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, one shop has actually hired cats.
Shop owners Sarah Munford and Laurel Quarberg employed two cats named Lucy and Lily for 13 years.
Munford said, “Everyone who comes into the shop loves the cats. Even on extremely busy and stressful days, petting them eases the tension. Whistling and giving the cats treats makes you feel better.”
Customers visiting the shop sometimes bring gifts for the cats.
Gallery owner Amy Morrison also keeps two cats. They help make the gallery feel more welcoming and cozy.
Morrison said, “The cats' main job is to sleep in the window and attract people.”
Keeping cats in offices or shops improves work efficiency. Having cats adopted from local animal shelters live in stores also supports animal welfare.
People who share their workplaces with cats agreed, saying, “Cats make the day more lively and joyful, and they boost sales as well.”
